Approach

Psychodynamic and relational therapy

The past does not stay in the past tense. It shows up in who you are drawn to, what you expect, and how you brace — including in the session itself, with me.

You might recognize

Some of this may sound familiar

  • You keep landing in the same dynamic with different people.
  • You know where it started, and knowing has not moved it an inch.
  • You manage closeness by working out what the other person needs.
  • You are curious about what happens between us, not only out there.

In the work

What we actually do

Naming the repeat

We track the loop: the kind of person you reach for, the moment you go quiet, the point where you start managing instead of being. Loops are easier to see from the outside, which is part of what I am for.

Using what happens between us

If you catch yourself performing for me, or bracing for my disappointment, that is worth saying out loud. It is usually not about me and it is usually not nothing. Few other places let you examine that with the other person right there in it.

A therapist who reacts

I am not going to sit silently and make neutral noises at you. You get someone with responses, which gives us something live to look at when it lands well and when it lands wrong. Where that gets complicated, we talk about the complication.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is this the lying-on-a-couch kind of therapy?

No. We meet by telehealth, 50 minutes at a time. The psychodynamic part is the attention to history and repetition, not the furniture.

Can my partner join a session?

No. All of my therapy work is individual, with adults. We can still work on a relationship without the other person in the room. Therapy outcomes are not guaranteed.

Does it matter where I am during a session?

It does. Weekly therapy takes place via telehealth. I am licensed in New York and can only offer psychotherapy services to people who reside in New York State. You also need to be inside the state at the time we meet, not simply registered there.

How is this different from talking about childhood?

History is the material, not the destination. What we are after is how it operates now, in your reactions, your choices, and in this relationship. So we keep an eye on what is going on in you while we talk about it.

What if I do not remember much of my early life?

Plenty of people do not. We work with what is here now: the reactions, the gaps, the feeling that turns up with no story attached. Memory is not a prerequisite.
