Therapy in the Bronx

Long after it ended, you're still assembling the case — the proof that it was as bad as you know it was, in case somebody asks. That isn't you being dramatic. That's what happens when reality itself was up for debate for years.

Working together from the Bronx

How this actually works

There is no office in the Bronx, so the work is telehealth, with you somewhere in New York State when we start. For this kind of recovery the setup is worth thinking about in advance: you need an hour where you won't be overheard, and for some people that is a room at home and for others it is anywhere but home. It's fine to say that out loud and plan around it. Sessions are 50 minutes, usually weekly.

I don’t have an office there. Weekly therapy is telehealth, and you need to be physically located in New York State at the time of each session.

Why people get in touch

What brings people here

Recovery, not diagnosis

The work is about what happened to you and what it did to your sense of what's real, not about labeling the other person. Melanie can't diagnose someone she has never met, and it isn't necessary. The work is closer to getting your own read on events back.

Self-trust before strategy

Coercive control works by making your own judgment feel unreliable, so it's common to arrive wanting rules for what to do next. We usually start further back, with noticing what you think and feel before the second-guessing arrives. That's slower than a plan. Numbness, blankness and 'I don't know' are workable material.

When you're still in contact

Not everyone can make a clean exit — shared children, shared money, shared work. Therapy doesn't require you to have left, or to be planning to. It does require some honesty about the cost of where you are. Therapy outcomes are not guaranteed.

FAQ

Questions from the Bronx

Do you see people in the Bronx in person?

No, there is no office in the Bronx. Weekly therapy takes place via telehealth. I am licensed in New York and can only offer psychotherapy services to people who reside in New York State. You also need to be physically located in the state at the time of each session.

What if I'm still in the situation and it's escalating?

If you are in danger right now, call or text 988 or dial 911. This site isn't a crisis service and email is not monitored for emergencies. A weekly outpatient hour is not an emergency service, and I'll be direct with you if I think someone else would serve you better.

Can you tell me whether my ex is a narcissist?

No. I can't diagnose someone I've never met, and it isn't necessary. The label tends to matter less than what you lived through and what it cost you, and your experience is the part that's actually available to us.

I keep wondering whether it was bad enough to count.

That doubt is often the last thing to go. It's something to bring into the room rather than something to settle before you come, and you don't need a verdict to start.

What does it cost?

$235 per 50-minute session, usually weekly. I am out-of-network with all insurance plans and there is no sliding scale, but you get a monthly superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement, which is never guaranteed. Cancellations need 24 hours' notice or the full fee applies.
