Therapy in the Hudson Valley
Leaving a high-demand religion does not end when you stop attending. What comes after is slower, and it is usually the part nobody prepared you for.
Working together from the Hudson Valley
How this actually works
There is no Hudson Valley office. Weekly therapy with Melanie is telehealth, anywhere in New York State. The session happens from wherever you are. You need to be physically in New York State when the session starts, and beyond that, where you live changes nothing about the work. Sessions are 50 minutes, usually weekly.
I don’t have an office there. Weekly therapy is telehealth, and you need to be physically located in New York State at the time of each session.
Why people get in touch
What brings people here
One of her seven specialties
Religious trauma and cult recovery is one of Melanie's seven core specialties, and the work explicitly includes ex-Mormon and ex-LDS experience. Recovering from a high-demand religion has also been part of her own life.
Pacing you can stay inside
Trauma-informed pacing is central to how she works. You set the pace, and nothing gets pushed for the sake of a breakthrough. Therapy outcomes are not guaranteed, and she does not put a timeline on any of it.
Somatic, not only talk
Her training covers somatic and experiential psychotherapy, Internal Family Systems, Inner Relationship Focusing, mindfulness-based approaches, and psychodynamic and relational psychotherapy. There is no physical touch in the somatic work — it means what is happening in your body comes in as information, alongside talking. Adults only, one-to-one.
FAQ
Questions from the Hudson Valley
Is there an office in the Hudson Valley?
No. There is no office anywhere in the Hudson Valley. Melanie's only office is in Manhattan, and weekly therapy does not happen there. Weekly therapy is telehealth, with you physically located in New York State at the time of each session.
Who are you able to see?
Weekly therapy takes place via telehealth. I am licensed in New York and can only offer psychotherapy services to people who reside in New York State. You also need to be physically located in New York State at the time of each session.
Do you work with ex-Mormon and ex-LDS clients?
Yes. Ex-Mormon and ex-LDS experience is named directly in how she describes this work. Melanie also has her own experience of recovering from a high-demand religion, which is part of why she is drawn to this work.
What does starting actually look like?
It opens with a free consultation of 15 to 20 minutes, held over video or by phone, and nothing is owed at the end of it. After that, sessions are 50 minutes and $235, usually weekly. Insurance: she is out-of-network with every plan, a superbill goes out monthly if you want to try for reimbursement that no one can promise, and there is no sliding scale.
What if I need help right now?
If you are in danger right now, call or text 988 or dial 911. This site isn't a crisis service and email is not monitored for emergencies.
